I talked with Shane yesterday. He told me about his and Ashley's experience trimming Scarlet's nails. Scarlet is Ashley's baby.......a pug that is about 3 now if I'm remembering correctly. She is a lovable little thing and she adores Ashley, but then who doesn't? :-)
Anyway, they took Scarlet to the vet a few months ago and asked if he'd trim her nails. His staff tried and finally gave up. They were afraid she was going to make herself sick from anxiety. The doctor gave Ash a sedative to give Scarlet the next time they needed to trim her nails.

"Well", and remember this is Shane talking......stone-faced, matter-of-fact, let's get down to business, Shane, "last weekend we decided Scarlet needed her nails trimmed. I didn't think she needed the sedative. She would be ok with Ash holding her. I started clipping and immediatley this horrible, gut-wrenching, agonizing, ear-splitting noise came from Scarlet. She squealed like a stuck pig. I'm not sure she was even breathing, just squealing."

One foot, two foot, three foot.............none of them could take anymore. They decided to try again the next day. Ash picked up Scarlett and Shane grabbed the nail clippers. As soon as Scarlet saw him coming towards her she started shaking and screaming. He couldn't get near her.

"Well," Shane said, "We've decided that her fourth foot isn't going to get trimmed this time and next time we trim her nails we are going to give her the sedative the doctor gave us. She just can't handle the stress."

As he is explaining all of this to me I'm laughing so hard I can hardly hear what he is saying. I'm picturing Ashley holding Scarlet, Scarlet wiggling, pawing and screaming, Shane, with that look of determination he gets, chasing her paws down one after another and clipping her nails. I think round one goes to Scarlet, what do you think?
